Essex Platform Tennis Club

Sally Riggio and Mike Foye defeated Ann Foye and John Paternoster in the finals of the EPTC Member (Member)-Guest on Sunday, March 4, at EPTC. Congratulations Sally and Mike! The Consolation winners were Casey O’Brien and Sam Webster over Sue Cawley and John Chatillon. The Reprieve winners were Jerry Cawley and Rebecca Foley over Robbin Myers and Brant Smith. Special recognition goes to Ben Ross, Kevin Burke & Robbin Myers for playing so well and taking part!

The Connecticut Shoreline Men’s C tournament was held on Saturday, February 25, and 15 teams participated at EPTC. In the finals, Brent Dickman and John Paternoster managed to beat Chris Cappello and Warner Swain. Congratulations to Brent and John. The Quarterfinals Reprieve champions were John Hauck and Payson Swaffield, both from Dedham Country & Polo Club (MA), over the father/son team of Charlie and Philip Dear. The Consolation Finals winners were Mike Foye and Mike Carr over Jim Sperry and Peter Evans. And the Consolation Reprieve winners were Rob Hayden and John Jibilian over Glenn Jamison and Lincoln White. The longest drive team came from Williamstown, MA (2.5 hours away)!

The Essex Platform Tennis Club captured its fourth straight Big Paddle on Saturday, Feb 25. The interclub competition pits Essex against Shelter Harbor, Longmeadow Field Club, and the competition’s host, the Hartford Golf Club. Essex was led by its two undefeated teams of Rob Caserta and Aaron Ribchinsky and Roddy Diotalevi and Phil Johnson. They also received big victories from Mike Fried and Ross Smith, Matt Holmes and Geoff Cartier, and John Bauman and Ryan McGetrick. Essex needed a sweep in the day’s final match against Hartford to prevent Longmeadow from taking the Paddle to Massachusetts. They were able to do just that amid tricky winds and a late afternoon snowfall. Thanks to Courtia Worth and Gil Keegan for making the day a big success.

The APTA Junior Nationals were held Saturday, January 28th, in Franklin Lakes, NJ. EPTC was well represented. Lexie Riggio and Hannah Halsey played in the 18 & Under Girls; Dylan Matthes and Jeff Riggio played in the 12 & Under Boys. While neither team made it to the finals, they played very well and had a great day! Others should be getting ready for the last junior tournament (Connecticut Junior Open) of the season on Feburary12th in New Canaan, CT. Hopefully, there will be a few teams from EPTC participating!

The Gould Cup will be held on Saturday, Feb 11th. This is a mixed doubles event for club members. Entries and questions should be directed to tournament chairpersons Jen and John Bauman. Other tournament details will be made available soon.
